ChatGPT Ads: What Businesses and Marketers Need to Know

📢 On August 27, 2026, ChatGPT ads went live in India. A week later, the self-serve Ads Manager opened up, which means any business in the country can now sign up at ads.openai.com, load a card, and run a campaign the same afternoon. Minimum daily spend is 725 rupees. That’s roughly the cost of two people having lunch at a mid-range Bengaluru restaurant, and for that money you get a full day of visibility inside conversations where people are already deciding what to buy.

Every founder we’ve spoken to this month has asked the same question. What is this thing, how does it work, and should I already be spending on it?

How ChatGPT ads work?

They appear at the bottom of a ChatGPT response, clearly labelled as sponsored, and visually separated from the answer itself. OpenAI is careful to say the ad does not change what ChatGPT tells the user. Ads currently show up only for logged-in adults on the Free and Go tiers. Anyone paying for Plus, Business, or Enterprise sees an ad-free experience.

Key points:

  • They appear at the bottom of a ChatGPT response
  • Clearly labelled as sponsored
  • Visually separated from the answer itself
  • Ads currently show up only for logged-in adults on the Free and Go tiers
  • Anyone paying for Plus, Business, or Enterprise sees an ad-free experience.

Matching is contextual, not keyword-based the way Google Ads works. OpenAI matches ads against the topic of your live conversation, your past chats, and your past interactions with ads. If you’re asking ChatGPT about setting up a home coffee bar, you might see an ad from Blue Tokai. The intent depth is genuinely different from anything else on the internet, because ChatGPT users are asking specific questions in full sentences with real context around them.

What makes the targeting different?

  • Topic of your live conversation
  • Your past chats
  • Your past interactions with ads
  • Specific questions with real context around them

Who can advertise?

Anyone with a business, as of September 4, 2026. When ads first rolled out in the US in February, the entry barrier was around $200,000 and required an invitation. That barrier is gone. Indian advertisers can open an account, spend 725 rupees a day, and start learning. WPP and Omnicom are the first India agency partners, though you don’t need one to run campaigns.

What this means for Indian businesses.

For the first time since Google Ads launched twenty-five years ago, there’s a new performance channel with genuine intent depth. This is not another social platform where the customer is scrolling passively. ChatGPT users are asking specific questions, expecting specific answers, and reading the response carefully. Whatever sits below that response, including the sponsored placement, gets absorbed too.

📌 It raises the bar.

When your creative sits directly below an authoritative-looking AI answer, a low-quality ad damages your brand more than the same ad would on Meta. The user is researching, comparing, deciding. They notice the ad in a way they never notice a scroll-past.

Good ads compound faster than anywhere else. Early Indian data is showing conversion patterns closer to bottom-of-funnel search than to top-of-funnel social. One live account we’ve been tracking reports a 4.25% CTR at an average CPC of 13.67 rupees. For context, median Google Search CPC across Indian D2C brands is roughly 18 rupees, and Meta CPMs sit around 290 rupees. ChatGPT ads in India are currently cheaper than both. This will not last.

Key figures:

  • 4.25% CTR
  • 13.67 rupees average CPC
  • Roughly 18 rupees median Google Search CPC
  • Around 290 rupees Meta CPM

What to do right now, you ask?

1️⃣ First, test small.

A month of testing at the minimum costs under 22,000 rupees, less than most agencies charge for a single Instagram carousel. Fund it out of your experiments budget.

2️⃣ Second, get your landing pages ready.

Users arriving from a ChatGPT ad come in with a specific mental model of what they were promised. Generic homepage conversion will not work. The landing page needs to match the conversation the ad appeared inside.

3️⃣ Third, invest in answer engine optimisation.

Even if you’re not spending on ChatGPT ads yet, your brand needs to show up correctly in ChatGPT’s organic answers. The same technical work that helps ads also helps organic visibility.

The platform is real.

The India rollout is live. Not every marketer needs to be spending here today. Every marketer does need to know where it might fit next quarter.
